The first monthly award also includes the late fixtures which took place in September meaning this month’s award is based on the opening 5 rounds of the Premier Division season. Every month 5 players will be nominated with the awarded decided partly based on votes received from GFT’s readers and the GFT panel itself. Here are the nominees for the GFT Premier Division Player of the Month for October’16:
Joseph Chipolina – Lincoln Red Imps
Lincoln’s attacking left back was in top goal scoring form over the past month and currently sits joint top of the goal scoring charts with 5 goals in 5 games. His highlight being a hat trick in Lincoln’s opening day 5-0 win over Lynx. The Left back scored a duo of headers alongside an acrobatic over-head kick in the comprehensive win. Chipolina followed it up with a tidy strike from outside the box against Gibraltar United whilst also converting a penalty in the 7-0 romp over Glacis. Aside from his goals, Chipolina has also noted 2 assists over the month.
George Cabrera – Lincoln Red Imps
Despite not having scored as many goals as other Lincoln team mates, Cabrera has been highly involved in the Imp’s win this month. Scoring 3 goals so far, Cabrera has also chipped in with an astonishing 8 assists, meaning he has been involved in either scoring or creating 11 out of 18 of Lincoln’s goals so far this season. Cabrera’s goals came from a header against Gibraltar Utd in a 2-0 win, a goal against Glacis where he would go on to create a further 4 goals in the 7-0 win and a tidy finish against Europa Point where he would also go on to create all of Lee Casciaro’s 3 goals in the 4-0 win.
Kike Gomez – Europa
In addition to scoring both goals in Europa’s 2-0 Pepe Reyes Cup victory over Lincoln Red Imps, Europa’s new striker has hit the ground running in the start of his debut Gibraltar Premier Division campaign, scoring 5 league goals in 5 games, whilst also contributing 2 assists. A real fox in the box type of player, Kike scored twice in Europa’s 3-0 win over Mons Calpe, whilst also setting up the third goal in stoppage time with a perfectly weighted pass. Gomez also netted a brace in the 4-0 win over Manchester 62, with single strikes against Lions Gibraltar and Europa Point. Kike has scored or assisted in 4 of Europa’s 5 matches so far this season making him one to watch out for for all defences.
Liam Walker – Europa
Walker, as expected, has been a real catalyst for Europa in the early part of the season so far. His crucial free kick against former club Lincoln gave Europa all 3 points in the season’s first clash between the ‘big two’. In total, the Gibraltar International midfielder has weighed in with 3 goals and 1 assist in his first 5 games wearing the green and black. A free kick against Manchester 62 in addition to his opening day curler against Lions Gibraltar shows Walker doesn’t score tap ins. Walker also assisted in Europa’s last victory against Mons Calpe in a 3-0 win.
Cristian Toncheff – Manchester 62
Despite a slow start to the month, Toncheff has now began to find his scoring boots. The big target man banged in a free kick from inside the box in the opening day draw against Gibraltar United, whilst also earning the free kick which lead to the opening goal scored by Fran Mejias. Toncheff scored with a stunning strike in the 2-1 defeat to Europa Point but went one better in Manchester 62’s 5-1 thumping of Lions Gibraltar by bagging himself a brace and also assisting Andrew Lopez in the day’s opening goal. Should Manchester eradicate their individual errors at the back and put themselves into contention to win games, Toncheff could be the one to lift them up the league in the coming months.
