2nd Division Gib Phoenix today notified the Gibraltar Football Association they were not able to meet the HGP requirements for this evenings game against Bruno’s Magpies. With their win in their opening game against FC Hound Dogs overturned due to a breach of the HGP rules, Phoenix were docked the 3 points and fined £350 for the infringement. A statement from the GFA read:
Gibraltar Phoenix FC have forfeited this evening’s game vs. FC Bruno’s Magpies, as they will not be able to comply with the Home Grown Player Rule. The match will therefore be awarded 3-0 in favour of FCB Magpies.
With the transfer window closed, they are unable to register any free agents on an amateur contract. In order to sign players outside the transfer window, free agents must be signed on professional terms and players signed must have been on a professional contract in the past. Therefore Phoenix find themselves in quite a predicament as they are in a race against time to be able to register a player in time for their next game against Boca Juniors on the 11th of October. Should they fail to play the game, they run the risk of being expelled from the league. Time will tell whether the league will be reduced to 8 teams or whether Phoenix are able to strike a deal and continue on with their season.
