St Joseph’s FC official statement with regards to the GFA Betting breaches by players Esteban Montes and Alberto Montano Gil
“A spokesman of the club has confirmed that the club has been more than willing to support the actions of the GFA integrity unit into alleged betting rules infringements.
This GFA special unit knows full well and has recognised on various occasions that the club has maintained and upheld its own high standards of integrity in supporting and co-operating fully in tackling what is sadly a wider socio-economic problem which afflicts not only football in general, but even our local game.
Our club is, like others, not immune to this cancerous and malicious threat, which we take head on and with zero- tolerance. We are happy to confirm that these two players have had their contracts terminated forthwith and with immediate effect.
The club fully supports all GFA initiatives to tackle this wide-spread problem in our local game and is happy to support a ‘no – bets’ policy in our game in which, our very league at the best of times bans the placing of bets on any local fixture. At the end of the day, betting companies pour very little money into the local game in terms of sponsorship, commercial or other income at club or league /cup level yet £6m approx were placed on bets worldwide in our league last year alone.
Throughout the season and at regular intervals, the club has maintained a strict betting policy, but unfortunately cannot control one or two individuals in a group of 30+ at the best of times. These individuals who are a disgrace to our sport have no place in our club, let alone local football. We fully support the sanctions brought against these individuals and the club is proud to have helped the process fully and fairly.
The club will announce further sporting news shortly as it looks forward to our new season after building on the success of last year, culminating in Europa League qualification.”
The news broke yesterday where their two players, Esteban Montes and Alberto Montano Gil were both banned and fined from all football related activities as per the GFA rules on betting.
