Mons Calpe had been moving heaven and earth over the summer period to build a squad capable of not only surviving in their first season in Gibraltar’s top flight, but to also ruffle some feathers and set their targets high. Man footballing contacts and linkups were established over the summer to bring in top players like Hugo Colace and Michele Di Piedi, both of whom have graced the English Championship during their careers. Some were tipping them as underdogs but others were aware they would be a threat to a St Josephs side which remained with their core of players from the previous campaign with subtle additions to make them a more complete team in terms of squad depth.
However, Mons Calpe were not phased by the occasion and duly picked up the 3 points at the first attempt. An early goal from lethal marksman Juan Pablo Pereira in the open minute set them on their way. Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Michele Di Piedi sealed the win in 2nd half stoppage time to present William De Andrade’s men with the best possible start to the new campaign.
