The top two clubs in Gibraltar, Lincoln and Europa, completed the first round of Premier Division action on Saturday with both recording contrasting victories to open their respective accounts for the new season. In the early kick off, Europa went up against Lions Gibraltar who had completely revamped their team from last year, giving it fresh Gibraltar United-like local flavour to the team.
Europa took the lead with 5 minutes remaining of the first half with new-boy Liam Walker scoring on his league debut for the club. But Lions Gibraltar pegged them back immediately thanks to a well taken free kick from Sam Gilroy.
But just as Lions were looking set to frustrate their opponents as the second half was running it’s course, up stepped Europa substitute Sykes Garro, a summer signing from Lions Gibraltar to break the heart’s of his former team to win the game for Europa.
The evening kick off saw champions Lincoln take the field against Lynx, a team they fared well against last season, inflicting heavy defeats on more than one occasion, with this game being no different. Lincoln raced into a 3-0 lead inside 30 minutes, with goals from Joseph Chipolina (2) and Kyle Casciaro to put the game beyond any doubt. Lincoln continued to dominate in the second half and added two further goals. Roy Chipolina calmly tapped in from a corner for number four and Joseph Chipolina completing his hat trick to complete the scoring.
After the first round of games, it looks like this year’s division will be evenly contested at all levels throughout the division. Both promoted teams look competitive meaning the double figure scorelines scored against some of the division’s new boys in the past seem unlikely to happen this season. The battle for the title should go all the way this season, with an even more intriguing battle for 3rd place and a potential Europa League spot could be contested by several teams. An exciting season awaits.
