After a terrific first half performance which saw Gibraltar enter all square at the break, inevitably Estonia proved to be too good on this occasion as they scored four goals in the 2nd half to end their barren run of results and secure their first win of the qualifying group. As often happens in the past with national team, early goals at the beginning of periods proved to be Gibraltar’s undoing once again as Fulham’s young attacking midfielder Mattias Kait scored the first of his 2 goal of the game on the 48th minute which was followed by a superb lob from veteran Konstantin Vassiljev just minutes later.
With Kait having scored his 2nd goal with 20 minutes to go, Gibraltar were looking to see the game out at 3-0 but it wasn’t to be. A deflected effort off Roy Chipolina from Sergei Mošnikov saw the ball evade the dive of Jordan Perez to nestle into the back of the net and complete the final 4-0 scoreline.
Gibraltar will take the positives of the first half into their next game against the might of Belgium where Gibraltar will have to repeat their performance in Nurnburg 2 years ago where a rearguard action limited the World Champions Germany to a 4-0 result. Belgium will prove another daunting test for Gibraltar, but when which the players will relish. The hunt of Gibraltar’s first competitive point goes on.
