Lincoln’s Champions League dreams ultimately came to an end at Celtic Park. A 3 goal salvo mid way thru the first half in as devastating 7 minute spell was enough for the hosts to turn the tie around and book their passage into Round 3 where they will now meet FC Astana of Kazakhstan.
Celtic were on the front foot from the word go and Lincoln were all backs to the wall as they defended desperately in an attempt to frustrate the Scottish Champions. The break through inevitably came in the 23rd minute as Lustig converted a loose ball to level the tie on aggregate. Celtic were soon in command of the tie as goals from Griffiths and the inspirational Roberts soon gave the Hoops an insurmountable lead. A combination of resolute defending and magnificent goalkeeping from Navas kept the scores at 3-0 as Lincoln started the 2nd half well and almost grabbed an away goal courtesy of Lee Casciaro shortly after the restart.
Brendan Rodgers would have been pleased to navigate this tricky hurdle with a confident home performance in his first competitive home game in charge. Celtic progress in the competition but as for Lincoln their adventure comes to an end as they now can look forward to a few weeks well deserved holiday ahead of the start of the new season in September.
